In this summer, I attended the Global Summer School (GSS) in Imperial College London. This programme is designed to give prospective students of ICL a better insight of the study and life in the college. The programme is quite massive with over 160 students from more than 60 countries in the world, and they were all selected from hundreds of applicants by the GSS admission office.

All of the students were divided into 3 streams consistent with their interests in the first week. I was in the engineering stream, and the other two were life science and physical science. The engineering stream was the biggest one with 60 people. In my opinion, it’s also the most exhausting one. We got to study in every engineering department in ICL, the time table was really intense. The campus is of medium size, but it’s still tiring to keep transferring between different departments.
On the first day, we began with an introduction from the manager of all Imperial engineering departments. He told us what engineers do, and how Imperial college faculty teaches students. He compared the teaching style of ICL and other two prestigious universities in the UK. Instead of focusing on the theories, Imperial College focuses more on the practical problems that can really be encountered in the work after graduation.

The first engineering class we had was chemical engineering. The teacher threw us many challenging questions, all those questions differentiate from the ones we did in our school. They simulate real world problems. However, later in the class we went to the carbon capture plant inside the college, it was much funnier.
The earth science and engineering class was similar, instead of hairy calculations we were given many challenging geology questions on Mars. The mechanical engineering class, material science class and the design engineering class all began with a brief introduction of the course, and followed by some small competitions.

The most surprising one was the civil engineering class, we did not talk a word about the problem engineers are facing, the teacher was teaching us economics, she tried to show us the connections between two subjects, but a lot of students didn’t have any knowledge of economics and just wasted their time. The civil engineering class really showed me, at university level, every subject has connections when it’s about solving the real-world problem.
The second week is quite different, all the people in the summer school were redistributed into 4 new themes-- robotics, food science, wearable tech, and space. It’s like the science week in our school but with shorter time and limited materials.I was in the robotics stream. Each group in the stream has 5 to 6 people, our purpose was to make a prototype of a robot that can help people or solve problem.

Apart from all the academic activities, the school also prepared some social activities. We watched The Lion King, and went to the west end musical. We also had a trip to Trafalgar square and a lovely cruise on river Thames.
There was a whole day off in Brighton, but it was a very chilly day we didn’t stay at the pier for a long time, instead we played the broad in a café for the whole afternoon.
At the end of the summer school we had a formal dinner as a farewell, although it’s just a two-week programme, some people still got very emotional.
