继十月底剑桥课程中心选修经济课的高三学生去圣吉酒店实地考察后,选修商业课的高三同学也在十一月初迎来了他们的实地考察课堂,他们的考察在锦里进行。同样,实地考察并不是打着这个旗号出去随便玩玩而已,考察结束后同学们完成了调研报告。这次的报告(中英文双语)由A2-1的刘宇瑄Lucas完成。
A business field trip to Jinli Street

Visiting Jinli in a gloomy rainy Monday was never appealing to anyone in the centre. However, students from A2 business class were seemingly rather excited. We were determined to leave this Chengdu's most popular street with something 'academic and informative' and The companion of Ms. Klopper had made this trip exceptionally unique. The business field trip to Jinli, for which we had been kept waiting for weeks, was definitely a rare treat to all of us.
无论是对中心里的哪个学生,在星期一的雨中参观锦里听起来怎么也不像是一件趣事。然而,A2商业班的学生们却对这次锦里之旅翘首以盼。我们都下定了决心,要从这条成都最家喻户晓的古街里得到有用的消息,Ms. Klopper的陪伴也让这次户外课堂增色了不少。几周的苦苦等待,商业学生们终于等来了前往锦里的商业实地考察。
The main aim of this trip was to learn about the business environment in Jinli street, which have been so influential amongst every shop in the street that a unified cultural atmosphere has actually been created, attracting millions of tourists every year. We were separated into three groups, and each group was responsible for investigating shop runners' language levels, pricing strategies taken by different shops, and foreign tourists' preferences of shopping.
本次实地考察的主要目的是研究调查锦里古街的商业氛围。多年来,锦里的大环境让其中的商家早已“合为一体”,创造出了属于锦里的独特文化气息,吸引着千千万万的中外游客。学生们被分为三组,分别考察锦里店家的语言能力,定价策略,以及外国游客的购物偏好。
The first group that looked into language levels visited gift shops, restaurants, and bars(from where Cherish and her teammates, interestingly, came out with a few bottles of rice wines in their bags). The job was rather easy to completing by asking the shop runners how well could they speak English. 'It depends on the size of a shop,' said Maskim knowledgeably, 'we can say that most shops, medium and large sized one more precisely, are able to serve foreign costumers and they have English-speaking shop assistants. But for some of the small shops we found out that runners couldn't speak English.'
调查店家语言能力的一组拜访了锦里不同的礼品店、餐厅和酒吧(小组的成员还不忘在酒吧里慷慨解囊,买走了几瓶米酒)。这一组的任务并不难完成,大家通过询问店内人员的语言水平便获得了信息。“语言水平其实取决于店家的规模,”王昱桦说,“可以说大多数商店,尤其是中型到大型的店家,他们接待外国顾客是没有问题的,并且都配有会说英语的店员。但是在一些规模小一点的店里,我们发现店主在接待外国游客上是有一定困难的。”
Another group finished observing prices in gift shops and had reached their conclusions. Evian told me that prices in Jinli Street was a bit higher that they should have been and she assumed it was because of its location and its customers. 'Jinli is mostly visited by tourists,' said Evian, ' and I don't think they really mind spending a little bit more money on gifts for the family, especially foreign visitors. You don't get access to panda dulls and chopsticks that easily after leaving China.'. Besides, a shop assistant (who was, according to Susan, 'fairly handsome and attractive') working in a gift shop told us certain Chinese-style souvenirs such as panda dulls and tea leaves would be 'inevitably charged for more than usual'.
另外一个小组观察了商店的定价策略并且做出了总结。蒲依雲告诉我,在锦里,价格明显会稍显略贵。她认为这种现象是由锦里的地理位置和客户群体导致的,她说:“来锦里参观的绝大多数是游客,我觉得他们不会介意在为朋友家人挑选礼物时多花一些钱。尤其是在中国,很多筷子、熊猫玩偶这类的纪念品离开之后就很难买到了。”除此之外,一位在礼品店工作的店员告诉我们,具有中国元素的纪念品,比如说茶叶、熊猫玩偶,都难免会被定价高一些。
It was the most fun to follow the group asked to spot out foreign tourists and asked them questions. After millions of attempts, thanks to Choca's brave and half-roared 'excuse me, sir', the group was finally able to start its first conversation with a gentleman from Switzerland with his Chinese wife. As we expected, he said that the biggest attraction was every panda-related product and he was impressed by the variety of products made simply based on panda. The next person the group interviewed who had been to Jinli several times already, was more fascinated by the cultural atmosphere. 'I like to watch those performers playing with fire, the show put on the big stage and all the fun stuff here.' He said. What I found really memorable was the conversation with a French couple. With both our students and this middle-aged couple from France speaking not very fluent English, students found out they were into tealeaves sold in Jinli and they would not mind if the price was a bit high. The conversation went incredibly well and was exceedingly heart-warming. We all agreed it was indeed very touching to watch two lovers with wrinkles on their faces holding hands together in a rainy afternoon, clumsily dressed in red and blue raincoats.
跟随最后一组的过程是最有趣的,这一组的同学负责找到锦里中的外国旅客并询问他们相关的问题。在几次胆怯的失败尝试之后,罗贝尔一声勇敢的低吼为小组争取来了第一个采访对象。小组采访了一位来自瑞士的游客,他带着他的中国妻子来参观锦里。不出所料,这位先生告诉我们他被锦里的熊猫产品所折服。仅仅基于熊猫这个简单的形象,商家们可以演变出琳琅满目的商品,这让他感到无比佩服。
紧接着小组采访了一位美国游客,他之前已经参观过锦里,并且表示喜欢锦里的文化氛围。他说:“我喜欢看吐火表演,大舞台上的演出和这里一切有趣的事物。”
最让我们难忘的是与一对法国中年夫妇的相遇。尽管双方互相都说着中式和法式英语,但谈话却出乎意料得融洽。这对夫妇被锦里的茶叶所吸引,他们承认价格的确比预想中的偏高,但也表示自己可以接受。我们都一致觉得,几十年的风风雨雨之后,依然能与恋人在淅淅沥沥的雨中,穿着皱巴巴的雨衣执手而行, 是何等幸福的一件事。
The field trip was undoubtedly fruitful to all business students. It is impressive to find out how commonly business and entrepreneurship exist in our daily life, and it actually combines perfectly with what we have learnt in class. Business world had never been kept away from us. Just like the smell of hotpot on everyone's clothes the very next day, it was everywhere.
毫无疑问,大家都从这次实地考察获得了不同的收货。我们感慨商业与企业家精神在生活中是如此的普遍,也惊叹现实生活中的商业与我们课堂里学到的知识有如此多契合之处。商业的世界就在我们生活的点点滴滴中,它就像是大家第二天身上的火锅味,无处不在。
