A field trip to St.Regis – the most popular five-star hotel in Chengdu
  ——Esther
  2016.10
On 24th October, Ms Klopper, Lillian and students in economics class went for a field trip to hotel St.Regis, a five-star hotel located in the centre of Chengdu, just about 1 km to Tian Fu Square. Visiting a hotel was something new for the economics class as the previous field trips were all in shopping centres like Tai Koo Li. And we really appreciate the effort Anthony put in helping us contact the hotel and arrange this trip.
We arrived at the hotel at around 11 am and were warmly welcomed by a hotel manager Rachel in the department of Human Resources. She briefly introduced the hotel and our guide for this trip, Ashley. My first impression of this hotel was given by its restroom as we were asked if anyone wanted to use the restroom before our trip began. The restroom was very clean, like in any five-star hotel, and equipped with hand cream after the guests wash their hands. This was considerate, especially in winter when people’s hands often get dry.
We then took a short look at the front desk and visited the mini bar in the hall. After that we went upstairs to see the Chinese restaurant and the conference halls. The Astor Ballroom is specially designed to hold events like weddings and birthday parties, and it can be divided into two individual sections for small events that may not need to take so much space.
Next, we went to the cafeteria called Social. When we arrived, the staff and chefs just started to prepare for lunch so we were lucky enough to take a look at the food it served. There was a great variety of foods that were western, Chinese and Japanese. They were put in orders of deserts, front course and main course. Table were arranged around the foods and near a huge French sash from which guests can see some buildings in Chunxi Road, the most popular shopping centre in Chengdu. However, we found that the problem of wastage is quite serious after four of us had lunch there later on as there were not many guests.
The SPA centre and the gym were on the 5th and 6th floor. It was a SPA centre especially for the guests in St.Regis. The rooms were private and they contained a lot of high-tech equipments like a five-sense chair. A swimming pool was near the gym which also got a French sash. Everything was clean and organized, like a five-star hotel should have been. On our way, we got to learn that most executives here were assigned from other cities and some even from abroad. In a word, the hotel sent people they trust to run a new one instead of recruiting local people.
What impressed me the most was the guest room. We were led to a standard room by a Regis butler. The room was about 50 metre square and the bathroom was large. Guests were welcomed by a room package which contained some fruits and snacks. A cupboard was placed next to the bed and inside it were some drinks in a fridge like beer and juice, some snacks like chips and a kettle. The bathroom had two sinks which was really considerate because if both guests were in a hurry, they can use the bathroom at the same time. Floor heating was for when guests had to step on the floor with their bear feet in winter. There was a butler service window in the closet. When it is inconvenient for guests (like when you just got up, wearing your pajamas) to open the door and take something or give something to the butler, they can take whatever they need from the window or put what they want to give to the butler. I have only seen this design in St. Regis, and this indeed avoided some awkward moments for guests.
Going up to the 27th floor, we got to see the Vintage XXVII bar. This bar was for events that need to be held outdoors for certain purposes or atmosphere like a wine party. Unfortunately, it was closed because of the bad weather when we arrived, but looking outside the glass door, we could tell that the bar had a great view and composed of a table with drinks in the centre, surrounded by many small tables.
The trip finished after we took the lift to the hall on the 1st floor, and every one of us was given a gift – a luggage tag from St. Regis. This trip not only showed us cases of application of some economics theory we learned in class, but also introduced us to a totally new field that most of us had no experience in before. Thank Anthony again for contacting the hotel for us and we also really appreciate the help given by Rachel and Ashley, two lovely ladies from the HR department.
